How russia is using hackers to destabilize Europe

russia continues its hybrid attacks against European states. In particular, Check Point, a cybersecurity company, has reported in its recent research on an operation by the hacker group APT29, targeting European diplomats. This group operates in the interests of russia’s foreign intelligence service, which is headed by sergey narishkin.

▫️ Since January, the hackers have been sending out fake invitations to “wine tasting” events, allegedly on behalf of the foreign ministry of a European state. The emails contained a link that, when clicked, installed spyware on the victim’s computer. The targets of the cyberattack included European diplomatic institutions as well as embassies of non-European countries.

russia systematically uses cyberattacks as a tool of foreign policy pressure aimed at destabilizing Europe.
