Fake fact-checking: russia simulates the fight against disinformation
russia continues its systematic attempts to present elements of its propaganda apparatus as part of the “international fight against disinformation.”
▫️ The “Dialogue on Fakes 4.0” forum was held in moscow. At the event, which is funded from russia’s state budget, senior officials and state media promoted familiar kremlin narratives. In particular, russian foreign minister sergey lavrov used the platform to once again deny the occupiers’ war crimes in Bucha and accuse Western countries.
▫️ The forum also actively involved the so-called “International Fact-Checking Network” (GFCN), created by the kremlin, which serves merely as a cover for spreading distorted information.
▫️ The direct involvement of officials from putin’s administration, state media executives, and the use of public funds indicate that russia is investing significant resources in creating a false image of “countering disinformation” in an attempt to influence foreign audiences.
The kremlin is turning pseudo-fact-checking into another tool of hybrid warfare. Under the guise of discussing digital security, russia is attempting to impose its own censorship standards on the world and cover up war crimes with rhetoric about “protecting the truth.”
