russia’s threat to Europe: new provocations and the allies’ response
russia is intensifying its military provocations and hybrid threats, testing the resilience of NATO’s defenses.
▫️ In particular, russian military aircraft continue to operate actively over the Baltic Sea. Polish fighter jets intercepted russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea for three consecutive days. On one day alone, Polish pilots were scrambled twice to escort two Su-30 fighter jets and an Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft. Poland’s Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, emphasized that russia is using such activities to test the capabilities of Poland’s air defense system.
▫️ European leaders are taking a realistic view of the scale of the threat and acknowledge that russia is preparing for further escalation. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that there are clear signs of russia preparing for broader aggression against the Baltic states, Moldova, and the rest of Europe. He stressed that Germany is already a target of hybrid attacks, including sabotage, espionage, and cyberattacks.
▫️ In response to these threats, the Baltic states are strengthening security at their strategic facilities. Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs announced the urgent reinforcement of security at a major hydroelectric power plant and the Inčukalns underground gas storage facility due to the threat of russian sabotage.
Earlier, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, citing intelligence assessments, warned that russia may be preparing provocations in Poland or the Baltic states. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also cautioned that russia could be planning a false flag operation involving Ukrainian drones.
russia’s systematic provocations — from dangerous military aviation maneuvers to preparations for acts of physical sabotage — are prompting European countries to accelerate efforts to strengthen their defense capabilities. Rather than intimidating Europe, the kremlin’s attempts to spread fear and panic are producing the opposite effect by rallying allies to respond more decisively.
