Elections in Moldova: russia intensifies information pressure
russia is increasing information pressure on Moldova ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28. Part of this campaign is an article by the russian security council secretary sergey shoigu titled “Moldova at a Crossroads.”
▫️ The article’s theses replicate classic kremlin narratives: accusations of “external governance” by the EU and “dragging into NATO.” Special attention is given to the expected election results. shoigu stated that russia “will accept any choice of the citizens” but warned that it must be a “genuine expression of will, not falsification.” Such wording creates an informational basis to challenge election results and can be used to justify further destabilization and interference in Moldova’s internal affairs.
It is important that such publications are synchronized with the actions of pro-russian media and political forces in Moldova, as well as with disinformation campaigns on social networks.
The influence operation in Moldova aims to maintain russia’s leverage in the region, disrupt European integration, and weaken pro-European forces through discrediting the authorities and mobilizing the pro-russian electorate.
Earlier, the Center prepared an analytical report on the channels and methods of spreading russian propaganda in Moldova.
