Who in Russia and Iran Was Sanctioned by the U.S. for Election Interference
The United States has imposed sanctions on two organisations in Russia and Iran for targeted disinformation campaigns related to U.S. elections.
In Russia, the sanctions target the Centre for Geopolitical Analysis and its director, Valeriy Korovin. According to the U.S. Treasury Department, Korovin operated under the instructions of Russia’s GRU and disseminated disinformation generated by artificial intelligence.
Korovin is a long-time associate of «Russian World» ideologist Alexander Dugin and the founder of the «Eurasian Youth Union», which is banned in Ukraine. Korovin had previously been sanctioned by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.
In Iran, the sanctions apply to the state entity Cognitive Design Production Center, which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Iranian media often refer to this entity as the «Innovation Centre for Cognitive Science and Technology», likely to present it as a civilian research institution rather than an IRGC division.
The simultaneous imposition of sanctions on these organisations suggests that Tehran and Moscow coordinated their efforts to interfere in U.S. elections. This serves as further evidence of the global threat posed by the alliance between the regimes of Iran and Russia.
