What the Visit of the French and German Foreign Ministers to Syria Signifies

French and German Foreign Ministers Jean-Noël Barrot and Annalena Baerbock have arrived in Damascus, where a meeting with Syria’s new leadership is scheduled. Baerbock and Barrot are the first EU ministers to visit Syria since the fall of the Assad regime.

This visit marks a step toward the gradual normalisation of relations with Ahmad al-Sharaa. It is likely that the meeting will address the prospects of lifting sanctions and potential EU assistance in Syria’s reconstruction. Notably, EU countries can offer Syria significantly more than Moscow, which is currently striving to maintain its presence in the region.

It is worth noting that shortly before the visit of the German and French foreign ministers, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriі Sybiha completed a productive visit to Syria, which included the launch of food aid from Ukraine to Syria.
