The Self-Proclaimed President Alexander Lukashenko to Visit China Ahead of Belarus Elections
Alexander Lukashenko, the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, will visit China ahead of the elections scheduled for January 26. This will be his third official trip to China in the past three years.
Lukashenko seeks to strengthen ties with China to support his regime and bolster his negotiating position with the Kremlin. Due to its close collaboration with Russia, Belarus has faced international isolation in recent years. At the same time, the country is under pressure from Russia due to the military presence on its territory, financial obligations for loans, and dependency on energy resources.
Minsk aims to revitalise joint Belarusian-Chinese projects such as the Great Stone industrial cluster, and cooperation in pharmaceuticals, mechanical engineering, and the defence industry. Additionally, Belarus hopes China can act as a mediator in unblocking transport routes to the EU.
