USA neutralized aarge-scale cyber threat from Russia
The U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI announced the completion of a successful technical operation to neutralize a network of compromised routers controlled by Unit 26165 of russia’s gru, known as APT28 (Fancy Bear).
▫️ By exploiting vulnerable home and office routers, russian intelligence services redirected data to controlled servers, intercepting traffic. By replacing legitimate services with fake pages, russian operatives stole passwords, tokens, and communications of military personnel, government officials, and critical infrastructure workers worldwide.
The systematic use of cyber tools by the adversary to attack Western states demonstrates the global nature of the russian threat. The use of civilian equipment in cyberattacks confirms that the kremlin is expanding its range of targets — from strategic assets to the personal data of citizens.
The Center previously reported on the detection of russian hacker activity in Europe through router compromises.
