russia is intensifying intelligence operations in space

The German government has recorded systematic flybys of russian reconnaissance satellites — several dozen times a day. Over the past five years, the number of such satellites has sharply increased, along with the risks to European security.

russian reconnaissance devices track the military infrastructure of Germany, satellite communication channels, and movements of the Bundeswehr. Germany has also recorded instances of russian satellites approaching at dangerous distances and attempts to jam signals, causing prolonged disruptions in space systems.

These are elements of a broader kremlin strategy — turning space into another domain of hybrid warfare. russia combines intelligence, technical pressure, and attempts to destabilize the satellite infrastructure of Western countries, aiming to weaken Europe’s defense capability and test its readiness for new types of threats.

The Center previously reported that russia is trying to compensate for technological lag with aggressive actions in orbit. Because of this, russian cosmonaut oleg artemyev was removed from the Crew-12 mission after suspicions of espionage attempts against SpaceX.
