Poland exposes russia’s mass dissemination of disinformation through AI
The Polish authorities have appealed to the European Commission to initiate proceedings against TikTok due to the mass spread of AI-generated content calling for Poland’s exit from the EU. TikTok failed to implement proper moderation mechanisms for AI content, thereby violating its obligations as a very large online platform (VLOP) under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
▫️ In the Polish-language segment of TikTok, videos generated by artificial intelligence are being detected that promote far-right and anti-European narratives. The Polish government has officially stated that this content shows signs of a coordinated information operation by russia and fully serves moscow’s interests, with the videos displaying clear signs of russian syntax.
▫️ AI allows for the creation of thousands of convincing messages in a short time. Synthetic voices and realistic texts appear authentic, making them difficult to detect.
The kremlin’s goal is to split the European Union from within, undermine trust in the EU, and weaken support for Ukraine. The Center previously reported that russia systematically uses AI and social networks to interfere in the internal affairs of European states. The situation in Poland is another proof of the escalation of russia’s hybrid war against Europe.
