kremlin is turning Vienna into a center of satellite espionage

russia is using diplomatic facilities in Vienna for radio-technical reconnaissance. In particular, at least eight antennas have been installed on the roof of the russian embassy, one of which can intercept signals not intended for the russian side.

The active installation of such equipment began after russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Vienna is of particular importance to russian special services, as it is home to the headquarters of the OSCE, UN agencies, the IAEA, and dozens of other organizations.

Currently, about 225 russian diplomats are accredited in Vienna, some of whom, according to estimates by European special services, may be performing intelligence functions.

This once again demonstrates the Kremlin’s systematic use of diplomatic cover for intelligence and cyber activities in Europe.

Earlier, the Center reported how Austria expelled a russian diplomat over a spy scandal in the country’s largest energy company.
