How russian hackers are trying to gain access to WhatsApp and Signal accounts
russian hackers affiliated with the russian authorities have deployed a large-scale campaign to steal access to Signal and WhatsApp accounts. According to Dutch intelligence services (AIVD and MIVD), the targets include military personnel, officials, diplomats, and journalists. The attackers do not compromise the encryption systems themselves but use social engineering tactics to trick users into revealing verification codes and PINs.
▫️ The most common enemy tactic involves fake chatbots posing as “Signal support service.” Hackers also exploit the “linked devices” feature, allowing them to secretly read messages and view the victim’s chat groups.
▫️ Signal has officially confirmed these attacks, emphasizing that its infrastructure remains secure and that account compromises occur only due to user negligence.
The Center urges vigilance: no messenger support service will ever request your verification code or PIN via chat. Regularly check the list of connected devices in your app settings. If you notice duplicate contacts or unknown participants in groups, immediately notify the administrator and update your security settings.
