France becomes target of cyberattacks due to its support for Ukraine
International media have reported a large-scale cyberattack on the databases of the French Ministry of National Education.
Hackers attacked the databases of Compas – an HR system for managing interns in primary and secondary schools throughout France. In total, cybercriminals gained access to the data of 243,000 employees of the Ministry of Education, mainly teachers, which they then posted online for sale.
French government structures and companies regularly become targets of hacker groups, which mainly work for russian special services. The increase in the number and complexity of cyberattacks in France is due to Paris’s active position in the international arena. First and foremost, this concerns support for Ukraine after russian military aggression. Also, France has a strong economy and a developed technology sector, which does not leave cybercriminals indifferent.
The Center previously reported on cyberattacks from russia, which were also experienced by Germany, Sweden, and Italy.
The purpose of these attacks is not just financial gain, as it might seem at first glance, but primarily the desire of hostile intelligence and propaganda structures to destabilize the situation and increase mistrust in state institutions in a number of EU countries.
