russia is systematically conducting information special operations, bribing media, and interfering in electoral processes in African countries.
▫️ In Angola, two russian citizens are to stand trial on charges of espionage, terrorism, and interference in the presidential elections. According to the investigation, they operated through a network organized by the intelligence services called Africa Politology, linked to the Wagner PMC, and coordinated influence operations on the country’s political processes.
▫️ The investigation established that the russians paid over $24,000 for placing disinformation materials, created fake pages disguised as media outlets, and promoted narratives about a “threat from the West.” Notably, in 2025, a social media account impersonating an Angolan media outlet disseminated false reports about Angola allegedly being drawn into the war in Ukraine.
At the same time, russia built influence in the political environment by offering up to $15 million for election campaigns in exchange for loyalty.
The exposure of the espionage network in Angola confirms that this is part of russia’s systematic policy in Africa. Despite anti-colonial rhetoric, in reality, the kremlin is implementing “hybrid colonialism” in Africa, seeking to control resources and prevent African countries from aligning with the West.
