Zimbabwe continues to fight against the recruitment of citizens for the war against Ukraine
The Zimbabwean authorities continue their systematic fight against recruiters who involve citizens in the war against Ukraine.
At the end of June 2026, Zimbabwean law enforcement officers arrested another recruiter, Edward Kachingwe, while attempting to transport mercenaries. Earlier that same month, counterintelligence arrested the russian handler Leonid Koftov, and in March, they intercepted a group of trafficking victims at Harare Airport along with recruiters.
The intensification of government actions followed the confirmation of the deaths of 18 Zimbabwean citizens in the war against Ukraine, with over 60 still held hostage in the combat zone.
A similar resolute stance is being demonstrated by other countries of the Global South. Kenya has shut down hundreds of front companies and arrested a russian diplomat-recruiter, while Nepal, Peru, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and other countries have launched hundreds of cases under articles on mercenarism and human trafficking.
This once again confirms that the kremlin is trying to compensate for losses on the front by luring foreigners with fake job offers, then stripping them of their documents and communication and throwing them into “meat grinders”.
Currently, over 28,000 recruited foreigners have been identified in the ranks of the occupying forces.
