Russia has recognized the Taliban regime in Afghanistan

The Taliban movement is known for its repressive policies, violations of women’s rights, and its former support of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Earlier, in April 2025, russian supreme court removed the Taliban from its list of terrorist organizations after years of gradually increasing cooperation with the Islamist movement.

kremlin is attempting to use Afghanistan as a transit hub for exporting russian gas to India and other goods to Pakistani ports. Additionally, russia may be seeking to use its normalization of relations with the Taliban to mitigate the impact of Western sanctions on its economy.
