Another Russian ship sinks due to sanctions
The Russian ship Ursa Major has sunk in the Mediterranean Sea. Official reports claim the vessel was transporting port cranes destined for Vladivostok.
However, in May 2022, the United States imposed sanctions on the Ursa Major due to its involvement in transporting military equipment for Russian troops in Syria. The vessel, owned by the sanctioned Russian shipping company SC South LLC. Therefore, it is likely that Ursa Major could have been transporting Russian weapons from Syria.
This marks at least the fifth incident involving Russian vessels in the past two weeks. It highlights the deteriorating technical condition of Russia’s navy, exacerbated by the war against Ukraine and sanctions.
