russia’s Energy Strategy 2050: the kremlin acknowledges the risk of oil sector collapse

The russian government admits that without major investments, a technological breakthrough, and the lifting of Western sanctions, the country risks a catastrophic decline in oil production or even disappearing from the global oil market altogether. These projections are included in russia’s updated Energy strategy to 2050, officially approved by the government.

▫️ According to the document, if current conditions persist, russia will have to cut oil exports by two-thirds. Under a “stress scenario” involving stronger Western sanctions and accelerated global transition away from hydrocarbons russia would be forced to stop oil exports completely by 2050. This forecast clearly indicates that the kremlin is aware of russia’s deep dependence on oil revenues and the consequences if its geopolitical isolation continues.

The new energy strategy is a survival plan — not a development roadmap. It shows that russia cannot secure its future without the lifting of sanctions and restoring relations with the West — meaning, without ending the war.
