fsue “rosmorport” has terminated its contract with the onega shipyard for the construction of two icebreakers due to sanctions.
▫️ These were 95-meter Icebreaker7 class vessels, which were to be a “novelty” for russia. The plan was to deliver the finished orders last year, but this was later postponed to 2026, and the shipyard was unable to even begin full-scale construction.
▫️ Due to the refusal of Western suppliers, the russian shipyard lost access to critical components that russia cannot produce on its own.
The problems of the onega shipyard are not an exception, but a systemic trend for the entire sector. The Center has already reported that russian shipbuilding is rapidly deteriorating: it was recently announced that 70% of the staff at the khabarovsk shipyard would be laid off due to a lack of orders.
The kremlin is trying to demonstrate “greatness” and strength, but the real situation in russia indicates technological degradation, financial instability, and the systematic curtailment of ambitious projects due to the war of aggression in Ukraine.
