How the Kremlin fools Russians seeking to profit from the war against Ukraine
Payments to the families of Kursk residents killed or wounded in the war have not been made since last July, while the region’s budget deficit has already reached 17 billion rubles ($175 million).
The seven-month delay in payments to the military in the Kursk region once again highlights Russia’s heavy losses and deepening economic problems—issues the authorities are trying to conceal.
Meanwhile, in the Samara region, Tatarstan, and other regions, authorities have increased payments for signing a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry—offering up to 4 million rubles ($41,000) and 2.8 million rubles ($28,000).
The Russian government is doing everything possible to lure recruits into fighting against Ukraine, using funds from already depleted budgets. But once someone who took the bait is killed or wounded, they are simply “forgotten.” After all, Russia’s priority is to get as much cannon fodder as possible.
