Why the outcome of Moldova’s presidential election is a defeat for russia
Despite russia’s efforts, Moldovan citizens chose a European future and re-elected President Maia Sandu. Her opponent, Alexandr Stoianoglo, former Prosecutor General of Moldova, represented the pro-russian Socialist Party.
▫️ Throughout the election campaign, russia launched information attacks and provocations against Moldovan authorities, attempting to interfere in the elections. There are also reports that moscow organized flights for Moldovan citizens residing in russia.
▫️ With Maia Sandu’s victory, Moldova’s pro-European leaders have secured a strong position leading into the 2025 parliamentary elections, signaling a setback for moscow in advancing its influence in Europe.
❗️Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation and a Ukrainian defense forces officer, highlighted that Sandu’s win aligns with Ukraine’s interests.
“russia will now be unable to secure a military path to Transnistria, nor hinder several avenues of strategic cooperation,” he said.
