Weather balloons in Poland as a tool of belarus’ hybrid pressure
Polish law enforcement agencies have recorded a new episode of hybrid activity by belarus.
▫️ On the night of April 10, more than ten weather balloons entered the Podlaskie and Warmian-Masurian voivodeships from belarus. These balloons are used to transport contraband goods and were equipped with GPS trackers.
▫️ Such aerostats allow operators to bypass traditional border control mechanisms. The presence of GPS navigation indicates the involvement of organized networks capable not only of coordinating smuggling but also potentially using these channels for provocations or intelligence gathering. In this way, smuggling may be employed in hybrid operations as part of belarus’s state strategy to destabilize Poland.
▫️ These incidents demonstrate a shift in the nature of border security: states are forced to adapt to monitoring low-altitude airspace and responding to objects that are difficult to identify and classify.
Against the backdrop of russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, belarus is increasingly integrating into the kremlin’s hybrid strategies, expanding its range of tools for influencing EU countries. The use of weather balloons may indicate testing of new destabilization scenarios and an assessment of the readiness of Poland and the European Union to respond to such threats.
