US sanctions hit Russian shipping giant

Russia admits that sanctions have seriously limited the capabilities of the “shadow fleet”.

▫️ The new US sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the Russian shipping giant Sovcomflot.

▫️ Despite ru-propaganda’s claims that “sanctions do not work,” the company itself has admitted to experiencing operational difficulties.

▪️ On January 10, 2024, the United States announced the introduction of new large-scale sanctions against Russia’s oil sector. The sanctions list includes 69 Sovcomflot vessels, including 54 oil tankers and 4 liquefied natural gas tankers.

▪️ Sovcomflot claims to comply with laws and standards, but in reality, the company’s vessels are used as a “shadow fleet” to circumvent sanctions.

Sanctions against Sovcomflot are an important step in combating Russian attempts to finance aggression against Ukraine through energy exports. The company’s complaints demonstrate that international pressure on Russia is effective, as it disrupts a key supply chain used to evade international restrictions.
