russia’s claims of a “provocation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP” are an intimidation campaign
russia’s foreign intelligence service (SVR) has claimed that “the West is preparing to accuse moscow” of a potential accident at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), alleging that “NATO countries are supposedly urging Kyiv to carry out a sabotage attack on the plant that would cause casualties among Ukrainians and EU citizens.”
▫️ Such accusations have no basis in reality and may indicate that russia itself is preparing a provocation at the ZNPP. However, the main goal of these statements is to intimidate the population of Ukraine and European countries.
russian intelligence agencies regularly issue fake “warnings” in advance — accusing Ukraine or the West of preparing terrorist attacks — in order to shift responsibility if russia commits such acts itself and to create a desired informational backdrop. The SVR has already made similar “predictions” about sabotage on pipelines, terrorist attacks in Europe, and assaults on critical infrastructure facilities — none of which have ever come true.
russia bears full responsibility for the safety of the ZNPP, as it is the occupying power, has deployed military equipment on the plant’s territory, and continues to exert pressure on its personnel.
