Pro-kremlin Telegram channels are spreading the message of Brussels’ “hypocrisy” regarding sanctions on russian fertilizers. According to propagandists, “forever chemicals” PFAS were found in the blood of 24 European officials, implying that eco-standards are a fiction and sanctions on russian fertilizers represent “double standards.” This is a typical example of misrepresenting cause-and-effect relationships, aimed at undermining trust in European environmental and sanctions policies against russia.
▫️PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of synthetic “forever chemicals” that hardly break down in the environment, accumulate in organisms, and are associated with health risks. They have been used for decades in industry and everyday life (non-stick coatings, water-repellent fabrics, food packaging, fire-fighting foams, etc.) — this global historical usage explains the presence of PFAS in people’s blood, not the “double standards” of officials.
The blood testing of 24 high-ranking EU officials was a voluntary monitoring organized by specialized institutions (including the Danish Ministry of Environment, EEB, and ChemSec) to record the actual impact of PFAS. The results serve as a regulatory basis: some PFAS are already restricted or banned in the EU (REACH/WHO), and the collected data confirm the need for further restrictions and enhanced environmental cleanup measures.
Linking the PFAS issue to the “ban on russian fertilizers” is manipulative. Sanctions against russia are of a security and legal nature and do not negate the EU’s environmental policy. The purpose of this narrative is to discredit the EU’s “green” transformation, rehabilitate imports from russia, and sow distrust in European institutions by replacing scientific data with political labels.
