russia Takes Its Disinformation War to the Streets of Vienna

russian agents, posing as “Ukrainian neo-Nazis,” launched a disinformation campaign in Austria’s capital, Vienna, aimed at undermining support for Ukraine in the EU.

▫️Journalists, using materials from Austria’s Directorate of State Security and Intelligence (DSN), established that russian agents systematically sprayed graffiti and posted stickers with neo-Nazi symbols on Vienna’s buildings, simulating a “Ukrainian trace.” The goal was to portray Ukraine as a radical and dangerous state to European society.

▫️Investigators report that a long-time russian intelligence agent played a key role, coordinating the creation and placement of provocative materials. The operation went beyond “street art.” A network of websites was created to mimic European hubs of the “Azov” movement and reinforce the illusion of a “Ukrainian threat.”

This case demonstrates the evolution of russia’s hybrid warfare: the kremlin is moving information operations directly onto the streets of European cities, creating a new level of threat to Western society.
