russia has intensified hybrid aggression ahead of elections in Sweden
Sweden’s security service recently thwarted a russian intelligence operation. Its aim was to influence the decision-making process in the country, particularly regarding support for Ukraine, as well as to discredit Sweden.
Swedish security services link the intensification of russian intelligence activity to the upcoming parliamentary elections, which will take place in the country on 13 September.
Sweden is far from the only country facing intensified hybrid attacks by the kremlin. Recently, the Center reported on the spread of fake content in the French information space targeting candidates in the 2027 presidential election who support Ukraine. Fakes of the same type were also spread in Germany targeting candidates in local elections. Source
Recently, russia has been systematically intensifying its hybrid aggression against European countries, seeking to destabilise societies, sow distrust and influence public opinion. Countering these attacks requires coordinated efforts by state institutions, the media and civil society.
