On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Russian media outlets are widely spreading narratives about the alleged “complicity of most European nations in Nazi crimes” and the West’s alleged attempts to “rewrite history.”
▫️ Propagandists accuse the West of “downplaying Russia’s role in liberating Europe from Nazism,” “reviving fascism,” and planning a “genocide of Russians.” They are also circulating an interview with Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, filled with propaganda clichés about “whitewashing Nazi crimes” and “attempts to undermine Victory Day celebrations.”
These claims are part of a broader propaganda campaign by the Russian Federation, which manipulates historical memory of World War II. In this way, Russia attempts to justify its war against Ukraine, the Kremlin’s ambitions for hegemony in Eastern Europe, and to fuel anti-Western sentiment among Russian citizens.
