Fuel oil disaster in the Black Sea: how the russians are only making things worse
Even four months after the crash of russian fuel oil tankers in the Kerch Strait, new oil spills are still being recorded along the Black Sea coast of russia’s krasnodar krai and the occupied territory of Crimea.
▫️ Thanks to the “efforts” of russian officials, the ecological disaster zone continues to expand. Residents of voskresensky hamlet, near the city of anapa, have recorded a video appeal to putin after thousands of tons of fuel oil-contaminated sand collected from the coastline were dumped on their land. They complain about the suffocating stench from the “fuel oil landfill.” Local authorities had promised to remove the dump by April 1, but instead they are bringing in even more contaminated sand.
As is known, russian officials have still not recovered the damaged tankers from the seabed — operations are set to begin only next year. Instead of addressing the problem, the russians are merely covering it up — while new oil slicks continue to wash ashore, propaganda reports on “safe beaches” and “successful preparations” for the tourist season.
