Fake report on Ukrainian athletes at the Olympic Games in Italy
The Center continues to document the ongoing disinformation campaign against Ukrainians in the context of the Olympic Games in Italy.
▫️ russian propaganda outlets have released a fabricated television report disguised as content from the Canadian broadcaster CBC. The fake video claims that Ukrainian athletes at the Olympic Games in Milan were deliberately accommodated “as far away as possible from normal people” due to their alleged “inappropriate behavior” at the previous Games in Paris.
▫️ In reality, this report is a falsification. In the original CBC material, the journalist makes no mention of Ukraine or Ukrainian athletes at all. russian propagandists used a fragment of authentic footage, replaced part of the video sequence, and added an AI-generated voice that imitates the journalist’s voice and contains fabricated claims.
The purpose of this disinformation attack is to discredit Ukrainians and undermine international support for Ukraine by exploiting the context of a major global sporting event such as the Olympic Games.
