russia continues its disinformation campaign aimed at discrediting the POW exchange process. This time, the russian foreign ministry is spreading false claims that “1,000 Ukrainian prisoners of war are deliberately not being taken back from russia” and that the delays in exchanges are supposedly due to “Kyiv’s immorality.”
In this disinformation attempt, propagandists are also promoting fake narratives suggesting that Ukrainian soldiers allegedly “dream of being captured” from the very beginning of their service.
These statements by the russian foreign ministry are part of an ongoing information operation conducted by russia to undermine the exchange process and erode trust in the Ukrainian government. However, these claims have nothing to do with reality.
Ukraine has repeatedly emphasized its readiness to carry out exchanges based on the “all for all” principle. Any delays in exchanges are caused solely by russia’s position, which uses the issue of prisoners of war as a tool for political and informational pressure. russia’s goal is to disrupt the “all for all” exchange through this information operation.
The Center has previously reported similar fakes, including false “appeals” allegedly made by Ukrainian POWs.
