As russia weakens, Kazakhstan deepens cooperation with the EU
During a visit to Brussels, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a number of agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation with the European Union, further highlighting the kremlin’s declining influence in Central Asia.
▫️ In particular, the EU and Kazakhstan signed cooperation agreements in the fields of transport, infrastructure, industry, and aviation. The agreements include the modernization of transport infrastructure within the framework of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor.
Strengthening ties with the EU marks another step by Astana toward reducing its dependence on moscow. While continuing to speak of a strategic partnership with russia, Kazakhstan is in practice actively taking advantage of russia’s weakening position caused by its war of aggression against Ukraine.
The kremlin’s unwillingness to end the war is leading to a further erosion of russia’s influence, even across the post-soviet space.
