New Oil Spill in the Black Sea
Following an accident during tanker loading in the novorossiysk waters of the Black Sea, at least 10 tons of oil products were spilled. The incident occurred at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal, where one of the berths is out of service.
▫️ On the day of the accident, August 29, russian officials claimed that the oil spill had been contained. However, satellite images now show that the contaminated area has reached a threatening size – 350 sq. km. The slick is moving toward occupied Crimea, posing a risk to the Black Sea ecosystem and coastal tourist areas.
This is already the second major oil spill in the Black Sea this year. Sanctions, equipment shortages, and technological limitations have pushed russia’s oil infrastructure to a critical state. Nevertheless, moscow ignores these risks, endangering residents along the Black Sea coast, including occupied territories.
