Fuel oil from Russian tankers reached Abkhazia
The fuel oil that leaked from the sunken russian tankers in the Kerch Strait has reached the shores of russian-occupied Abkhazia. An environmental monitoring laboratory detected elevated levels of petroleum products in the Black Sea waters.
▫️The accident occurred back in December last year, but the scale of the pollution is still increasing. russian authorities failed to contain the environmental disaster in time, allowing the fuel oil to spread over hundreds of kilometers along the coast. Since the wreckage of the tankers still remains on the seabed, oil leaks may continue.
▫️Seven months after the disaster, the problem is simply being ignored. The authorities have stopped even pretending to address the aftermath: no active work is being carried out, and beaches contaminated with fuel oil are filled with tourists.
russia’s negligence is turning its own territory and occupied regions into zones of ecological disaster. kremlin once again shows that, for the sake of its political interests, such as oil trading circumventing sanctions, it is willing to risk the environment, people’s lives, and health.
