School history textbooks as a tool of Kremlin propaganda

Russia has introduced a new history textbook for grades 6–11, authored by Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to the Russian president and known for publishing other “ideologically correct” textbooks.

▫️ The textbook claims that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin “had no choice” but to start the war against Ukraine, alleging that the West and NATO “ignored Russia’s interests” and turned Ukraine into an “aggressive anti-Russian stronghold.”

The Kremlin has weaponized education as a tool for propaganda and controlling public perception. Moscow recognizes that school-age education shapes fundamental views on history and politics, which influence perspectives later in life. By embedding propaganda into school materials, the Kremlin aims to cultivate a generation that views the actions of the Russian government, including its war of aggression against Ukraine, as “justified” and “historically valid.”
