Why more and more russians can’t afford new smartphones
A record drop in demand for smartphones has been recorded in russia.According to russian state media, smartphone sales in the first three months of this year collapsed by approximately one-quarter compared to the same period last year. A similar trend is observed with other portable electronics — laptops, tablets, etc.
▫️ russian propaganda is trying to explain this collapse by claiming the market was “overheated” in previous years and that russians have supposedly already updated their gadgets and “the new replacement cycle has not yet begun.”
In reality, the situation in the smartphone market is the result of broader economic crises in russia amid massive war expenditures and Western sanctions. The real incomes of average russians have dropped significantly. On top of that, loans in russia have become much more expensive and less accessible over the past year. The kremlin’s war of aggression is hitting russians harder with each passing day.
