Russia is discussing state regulation of prices for the “borscht set”
the ministry of industry and trade of russia proposes to fix the maximum price level for vegetables in the “borscht set” in long-term contracts between suppliers and retail networks.
▫️ This initiative is an attempt to halt the sharp rise in prices for essential vegetables that has been observed in russia recently. According to rosstat, in 2025, potatoes in russia rose by more than 280%, onions by 87%, cabbage by 56%, and so on. To stop the price increase of potatoes, russian government had previously purchased them from China, belarus, and Mongolia.
Currently, russian propaganda is trying to explain the sky-high prices for vegetables as a result of temporary unfavorable conditions and seasonal fluctuations. However, the main reason for all of russia’s economic troubles is the ongoing aggressive war against Ukraine and Western sanctions.
