As part of a propaganda campaign marking the so-called “day of national unity,” russia is holding numerous events dedicated to the “unity of russia’s peoples,” promoting narratives about the “happy life” of the country’s multiethnic population.
▫️ Particular attention from propagandists is focused on the russian dictator vladimir putin’s introduction of two new holidays — the “day of indigenous small-numbered peoples” and the “day of the languages of russia’s peoples.” State media present this as proof that all conditions have been created for the “free development of indigenous peoples” in russia.
In reality, this is yet another propaganda performance aimed at concealing the kremlin’s true policy toward indigenous communities.
Behind the slogans of “equality,” russian propaganda hides a systematic policy of ethnocide against indigenous peoples. In the national republics of the russian federation, authorities have abolished mandatory teaching of native languages in schools. russia has withdrawn from the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, and residents of national republics are being mobilized for the war against Ukraine in numbers disproportionate to their population size.
Despite propaganda claims about “equality,” russia continues its consistent policy of russification of indigenous peoples.
