For the first time in six years, russia has purchased more food products than it sold.
▫️In the first half of 2025, imports of food products and raw materials increased by 14.6% compared to last year, serving as further evidence of the deep crisis in russia’s agricultural sector.
Due to critically low domestic production and in an attempt to contain the rapid rise in food prices, russia was forced to import butter from the UAE, India, and Argentina, and later potatoes from China and Mongolia. This is compounded by a nearly 35% drop in wheat exports.
Economic problems caused by massive war spending and sanctions are destroying entire sectors of russia’s economy and leading to its economic degradation.
