“Digital prison”: russia blocks korean and turkish messaging apps
A new wave of messaging app restrictions has been reported in russia. This time, users are experiencing disruptions to the Korean messaging app KakaoTalk and the Turkish platform BiP. Both services had become popular alternatives to Telegram following its blocking.
▫️ Although the russian authorities have not commented on the disruptions, experts believe they are the result of a deliberate campaign by state regulators. Blocking platforms even from “friendly” or neutral countries demonstrates that the russian government is willing to go to any lengths to maintain total domestic control.
The kremlin is systematically depriving its own citizens of digital tools used even for everyday communication. The ultimate goal of this censorship campaign is to eliminate all communication platforms beyond state control and turn russia’s information space into an isolated “digital prison.”
