What Global South media write about Ukraine: The Middle East and Africa
The Center continues to monitor the information space in the Global South to identify narratives favorable to russia.
▫️ This week, Middle Eastern and African media covered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the United States. They highlighted his call for a truly just peace and quoted him as saying that the events of this fall would determine the outcome of the war.
▫️ The media in the region also widely circulated the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission’s statement, which condemned russian strikes on infrastructure as violations of humanitarian law.
▫️ Saudi Arabian media responded to russia’s latest nuclear threats, noting that they “no longer scare anyone” and that a nuclear strike is unlikely.
▫️ Also, some media outlets in the region broadcast manipulative statements from russian officials without providing proper context. This included maria zakharova’s unsubstantiated claim that weapons supplied to Ukraine end up in the hands of extremists in the Middle East.
▫️ Egyptian journalists focused on russia’s influence in Syria, pointing out how russia is using cultural initiatives, such as introducing the russian language in Syrian schools, to assert its dominance.
