russian propaganda continues its campaign to discredit Ukrainian servicemembers by generating fake stories in which soldiers are portrayed as the culprits of criminal news.
▫️ One of the latest examples is a false claim that in Chernivtsi, a Ukrainian soldier allegedly shot a pensioner in the leg and brutally beat him for speaking russian. As “evidence,” pro-kremlin sources circulate a screenshot of a Ukrainian news website with a headline falsified using photo-editing software.
In reality, a domestic conflict occurred in Chernivtsi between two men, during which one shot the other with an air pistol. No one was seriously injured. There is no confirmation that the incident was related to language issues, nor that either of the participants was a servicemember.
Creating such fakes by altering headlines and distorting the content of real news is a typical tactic of russian propaganda. The enemy uses these manipulative stories to smear Ukrainian soldiers in the eyes of society and provoke division between the military and civilians.
