russia spreads false claims of “medical experiments” on prisoners of war in Ukraine

russia continues its campaign to discredit Ukraine regarding the treatment of prisoners of war.

▫️ In particular, the so-called ambassador-at-large of the russian foreign ministry, rodion miroshnik, released another “report” alleging that wounded prisoners are supposedly being used in Ukraine for “medical experiments” and for the training of medical students in hospitals, including in Sumy. The source of these claims is allegedly the “testimonies” of russian servicemen who returned from captivity.

▫️ Such statements are false and constitute an element of the information war against Ukraine. russian propaganda systematically promotes narratives about alleged “torture,” “secret prisons,” and “inhumane treatment” of russian prisoners of war; however, these claims have not received credible confirmation.

Ukraine strictly adheres to the norms of international humanitarian law. Unlike russia, Ukraine ensures a transparent monitoring mechanism and cooperation with international organizations, whose representatives have regular access to places of detention of prisoners of war.

At the same time, numerous documented cases of torture, ill-treatment, and complete isolation of Ukrainian prisoners of war concern russia. International human rights institutions have repeatedly reported systemic violations of the rights of Ukrainians held in russian captivity and the lack of proper access to them for international observers.
