Opening of the Mariupol Drama Theater: russia rewrites the history of its crime
russian media are widely promoting the so-called “ceremonial opening” of the Mariupol Drama Theater — from pro-kremlin bloggers to federal TV channels. Behind this staged “celebration” lies a cynical attempt to rewrite the history of russia’s war crime.
▫️ As is well known, the theater building was destroyed by a russian airstrike on 16 March 2022, despite the large “CHILDREN” sign and the presence of hundreds of civilians inside. According to various estimates, around 600 Mariupol residents were killed. However, for nearly four years the occupiers have refused to acknowledge responsibility for this tragedy, continuing to falsely claim that the theater was destroyed by Ukrainian forces.
▫️ The russians have staged a “celebration” at the site of a mass killing of civilians, turning it into a propaganda set. At the same time, russian media and public figures are synchronously producing narratives about the “revival” of the Mariupol Drama Theater, calling it a “symbol of peace.”
In this way, russia is attempting to erase the memory of its own crime and replace it with a convenient myth about the so-called “reconstruction of Donbas.”
