Due to russia’s inaction, the environmental disaster in the Black Sea is escalating
Satellite imagery reveals new fuel oil leaks from sunken russian tankers in the Kerch Strait. Environmentalists are sounding the alarm, but russian officials show no urgency in responding.
▫️ A significant part of the oil products settled on the seafloor after the tankers sank due to low temperatures. However, as temperatures rise, the oil is expected to resurface. Experts forecast new fuel oil spills along the shores of occupied Crimea and russia’s krasnodar krai in April. Environmentalists estimate that it will take at least three years to eliminate the consequences of the spill, and full restoration of the Black Sea coastline may take between five and ten years.
The situation is extremely serious, yet russian authorities have not even managed to lift the tankers from the seabed—salvage operations are scheduled to begin only next year. Instead of tackling the problem, the russian government relies on propaganda. In an attempt to create the illusion of control, officials plan to send thousands of children to the ecological disaster zone for “health improvement” programs.
