russian officials have launched an active information campaign to justify the illegal holding of «state duma elections» in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
russia’s CEC head ella pamfilova said that for residents of the occupied regions, the opportunity to vote is a «hard-won right». To divert attention from the holding of pseudo-elections amid military risks, russia’s сentral еlection сommission announced the introduction of a «special procedure» for voting in the temporarily occupied territories. Under the new rules, voting is allowed in residential courtyards in frontline areas under the pretext of «security risks».
Through such rhetoric, the kremlin is trying to legitimise processes taking place under military occupation, coercion and the absence of independent observers. The introduction of «courtyard voting» and mobile voting groups also creates ideal conditions for falsifications and inflating the required turnout figures.
No matter what excuses russia’s CEC comes up with or what «special procedures» it introduces, the «elections» in Ukraine’s temporarily occupied territories will remain completely illegitimate, as they are held in violation of international law.
