The “Holy” nuclear bomb: How the Russian Orthodox Church militarizes Russians
The Russian Orthodox Church continues to openly militarize Russian society. This is evidenced by a steady stream of new statements from its leadership, which have nothing to do with either spirituality or the fundamentals of Christian ethics.
▫️ kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, stated in his latest sermon that the creation of the atomic bomb in the USSR was due to «divine intervention». According to him, the emergence of nuclear weapons supposedly saved the Soviet Union from «terrible destruction», while the development of the bomb itself was guided by «God’s grace and mercy».
▫️ The situation is deeply paradoxical. An institution that presents itself as a defender of «traditional spiritual values» and routinely contrasts Russians with the supposedly «immoral West» has spent years cultivating a culture of militarism and violence among its multi-million-strong flock.
❗️ Such statements form part of the Russian Orthodox Church’s long-standing strategy to sacralise war and provide a «Christian» justification for the Kremlin’s acts of aggression. This organisation has long served not God, but the Kremlin, as an instrument of state propaganda. Clear evidence of this is a book recently published by kirill, in which participation in the war is portrayed as a «godly cause».
