Cyberattack on German railways — part of the kremlin’s hybrid warfare

Germany’s railway operator, Deutsche Bahn, has been targeted by a large-scale cyberattack, reportedly potentially linked to russian hackers.

▫️ As a result of a series of DDoS attacks, the ticket booking system and passenger information services were paralyzed, disrupting the operation of critical transport infrastructure in one of the EU’s largest economies.

▫️ Based on their characteristics and technical tools, similar attacks have repeatedly been associated with hacker groups controlled by russian intelligence services, including APT28 and NoName057(16). Their activities form part of russia’s hybrid strategy aimed at destabilizing European Union member states.

▫️ The objective of such operations is to undermine public trust in state institutions and create a sense of chaos and vulnerability. It is also important to note that disruptions to railway operations affect not only passenger transportation but also military logistics and commercial supply chains.

The cyberattack on Deutsche Bahn represents a continuation of the kremlin’s hybrid measures against Europe. This systematic policy by russia requires a coordinated response from the EU, including new sanctions against russia and strengthened cybersecurity measures.
