The Russian threat to Europe in cyberspace is growing
The Kremlin is stepping up hybrid attacks aimed at undermining stability in European countries. This is confirmed by intelligence reports. The annual report from the Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD) to the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament states that Russia is becoming more active and aggressive in cyberspace.
▫️ For the first time, MIVD recorded a cyberattack by Russian hackers with signs of sabotage in 2024. It targeted a public infrastructure facility. Attacks on the websites of political parties and public transport systems were reportedly carried out to prevent citizens from voting in the European Parliament elections. Although these attacks did not cause any damage, they served as an alarming signal of the growing cyber threat from Russia.
Russia systematically uses cyberattacks as a tool of pressure on foreign states. The Centre also reported that hackers linked to Russian foreign intelligence sent phishing emails to diplomatic staff as part of Russia’s campaign to destabilize Europe.
