What the Global South Countries write about Ukraine: Middle East

The Center keeps monitoring the information space in Global South countries and identify beneficial to russia narratives that are being disseminated there.

▫️ Most Middle Eastern media maintain a tendency to portray both parties in the russia-Ukraine war equally, rather than as aggressor and victim, which benefits the kremlin. Regional media, without context, have spread the russian ministry of defense’s statement that russian fighter jets prevented American bombers from violating russian airspace.

▫️ Saudi media outlet Al Arabiya, reporting on the murder of Iryna Farion, described her in terms favorable to russian propaganda, claiming she “called for the killing of russians and russian speaking people everywhere.” The same outlet also spread a statement from russian foreign ministry spokeswoman maria zakharova, alleging that Ukraine “planned an assassination attempt on putin.”

▫️ On the Egyptian channel Sada Al-Balad, which signed a memorandum with RT, a journalist accused the West of double standards regarding the war in Gaza compared to the war in Ukraine.
